Living for the Glory of God ~ Vivir para la Gloria de Dios

Unshelved ~ What I Read in June (2018)

Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are. ~ Mason Cooley

Reading has the propensity to fulfill a number of roles in our life if we would only permit ourselves to read more. Here’s a quick look at what I read this past month.

Books of Biblical Emphasis

The following books are geared towards Christians and Christian living.
Books of Cultural Emphasis
Books written from a cultural mindset, analyzing people or people groups for the purpose of growth.
  • How to Read a Book by Mortimer J. Adler: A great read about how to read. It’s intense and depending on your reading, not all will be applicable, but still highly recommended.
  • The Power of Vision by George Barna: George Barna writes to compel people to a point of vision. Honestly, it was not a great book. Read my review here.
  • Hacks by Donna Brazile: I’m not opposed to reading books who will obviously go against my own beliefs, but I only permit a select few in simply so I can invest the majority of my reading time elsewhere. But, when this one went on sale, I decided to pick it up. I was pretty disappointed, and not just because of the difference in values
Books of Fictional Emphasis:
Ok, so most of these are Louise Penny books.
  • The Brutal Telling, Bury Your Dead, A Trick of the Light, and Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny: I’ve been working my way through her Inspector Gamache series for a while now, and this month found myself relaxing with four of her books. While fiction and mystery, she provides great literary value in her masterful development of characters and unnoticeable insights into people.
  • Sideways Stories From Wayside School by Louis Sachar: A book from my youth . . . I remember the librarian reading this book to our class in third grade. I wanted to see if it was as I remember and screen it as a potential book for my children as they get older.
My hope is that all will be encouraged to read more. Perhaps there is a book on this list that may pique your interest and cause you to read more. That would bring me great joy! Take a moment and decide, what is it that you want to read this month?
